Burning Love – Rotten Thing To Say – Album Review

So I’m in the basement of the First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia last year to see Converge. As I walk in, there is a sound coming through the speakers that is not quite hardcore and not quite metal, but definitely with some blues mixed in. The band on stage is 10 feet away and absolutely killing it. The band is Burning Love. When the set finishes, I run over to the merch table and pick up their CD (Songs for Burning Lovers). I am happy to report that on their latest album Rotten Thing To Say, everything that made me a fan that night is back…and even better!

Chris Colohan is the voice of the band; leading the way with gritty, honest lyrics sung from the heart. If you liked his involvement in Cursed, this is a bit of a departure, but it works. The guitars are catchy, angry and filled with aggression. Burning Love is one of those bands that can mix all kinds of styles into one song, and make it work brilliantly. A perfect example is ‘The Body’, mashing together solos, heavy riffs with a bit of sludge from the bayou. The band rips through each tune with abandon and there really isn’t a bad song on the disc.

From my personal concert experience, Burning Love is a band you must put on any must see list. Rotten Thing To Say does a more than adequate job of translating all their passion and energy into something you can listen to in your car. The production is excellent, and with Kurt Ballou involved in the recording – you can’t lose!

Burning Love has stepped up with this effort, and I can’t wait to see what is next. Because they don’t fit into one category is exactly why I feel the sky is the limit for this crew. Go get it!
