What is best in life? To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.
Conan. The name strikes fear into mortal men. On their first full-length album, Conan defies Crom himself – unleashing a punishing blow to the unsuspecting masses. They substitute guitars for battle axes; drums pound skulls and vocals wail like a wounded Pictish warrior. Yes, Conan is heavy as hell. And Monnos might just mark a new dawn of all things doom.
This UK trio rumbles its way over 40 minutes of thick riffs and ambient soundscapes. It’s an album that is best heard in its entirety, since each track leads directly to the next. The opener, ‘Hawk As Weapon’, builds momentum as it quickens its pace; culminating in a salvo of shrieks that prepares the listener for the conflict to come…
‘Battle In The Swamp’ transitions from ‘Hawk’ into a steady, unrelenting groove. I know I am way too into this stuff, but damn if this song doesn’t conjure images of Frank Frazetta’s Death Dealer riding a stallion of dread over the permafrost.
What’s amazing about Conan is the tightness of their presentation and the urgency of each song. So much doom just sounds aimless. Monnos keeps things moving; with sound coming in waves – peaking, and then crashing on icy shores. The musicianship is outstanding throughout.
By the time you get to the closer ‘Invincible Throne’, you feel as if Valhalla truly awaits. It’s an 8 minute plus journey punctuated by some of the best drumming on the album. Overall, production is perfect – capturing the bleak drone to great effect.
Put on this music and go find a kingdom to plunder. Always go with what is best in life. Highly recommended.
