I’ve been sat in a musical black hole for quite a while now and boy is it a lonely place. Evidently there is plenty of it around, you only need to take a look other reviews to see that, but very rarely has my head been turned and anything been described as more than ‘alright’. I need something to pull me out of this bleak state and allow my ears to find some happiness again.
Last year I was introduced to Umber, I thoroughly enjoyed the sunkissed ambient sounds that stole my mind away from the world and just allowed me to be. It only seems natural then for me to review Believe You Me, an EP by Liam Hennessy, whose own sound draws a huge influence from his friend and touring partner, Umber.
And oh my, I’m so very glad I did. From the opening moments of ‘You Have My Word’, the beautiful acoustic guitar phrases make me feel so incredibly happy, I wonder if I ever really were in a bad place with music. There’s a wonderfully warm glow that beams from the track like sunshine pouring through windows on a beautiful summer day.
‘Star Map’ is equally pretty, with wonderful twinkling sounds and again gorgeously warm tones at its heart. The whole of Drops’ Believe You Me is full of this blissful feeling, it’s quite overwhelming. I honestly cannot get over that this is Drops’ first release, I’m astounded by the talent that Hennessy displays. I’m so looking forward to a full length release.
There are only 20 minutes of this stunning little EP, and every minute completely absorbs my attention and draws me into Drops’ world. If there were more releases this year as marvellous as this, I’d be a very happy girl.
Believe You Me is available from Drops’ Bandcamp on 28th June for a mere £2. If you like your ambient sounds and rolling acoustic guitars, you’ll love it. http://drops1.bandcamp.com/
