It’s been a while since a band just kicked me in the teeth the first song in and went on to beat me into submission for the next 30+ minutes. Like a gateway drug taking you to a dark place, Enabler’s new album All Hail The Void moves you into a musical abyss – where genres clash to create an absolutely epic listening experience.
This type of music is right in my wheel house. Its backbone is D-beat crust, but it adds so many other sounds, it really is hard to categorize. Songs like ‘All Hail The Void’ and ‘They Live, We Sleep’ add in some killer death metal blast beats and guitar flourishes. Did I mention that thrash also gets its share of attention? The key word that describes Enabler is…versatile- to the freaking max!
The thread that holds the entire beast together is the songwriting. This is clearly a hardcore band with hardcore sensibilities. Political, incendiary and thought provoking lyrics rule the day. One of the best song titles of the year ‘False Profit’ is a beauty, in both its message and technical execution. Enabler stays focused throughout, with the production just perfect in every way.
The year 2012 has continues to be a benchmark in music for me. All Hail The Void is right up there with Black Breath’s latest Sentenced To Life. I hope the trend continues of genre-busting bands that just put everything they’ve got into their music. Enabler succeeds in such a huge way; it would be a shame not to pick this one up. This one is already firmly in my Top 10 of the 2012.
